What is functional fitness?

SymbiosFIT uses functional fitness training to help you live a longer and better life. So, what exactly is functional fitness? Before functional fitness even had a name, all of our ancestors were doing it. These people depended solely on their bodies and prehistoric tools to survive. An article written by Brodie Schoeder on musclearmory.com has a great explanation of our purpose.

Ever hear of the phrase “Survival of the fittest”? This is how the human race was able to endure over millennia. Our bodies adapted to our environment and what we needed to do to survive. By training your body the way it was designed to be used”.

7 Functional Movement Patterns

Functional fitness is a type of exercise that supports your everyday life with seven basic functional movement patterns of a human. Our bodies were developed to have all of our muscles work together and support each other to accomplish certain movements and tasks. These exercises improve functional strength. Functional fitness is something that is rooted in all of us.

The Activities of Daily Living

  1. Squat
  2. Lunge
  3. Hinge (bend)
  4. Push
  5. Pull

  7. Gait (walk, run)

Definitions of Movement Patterns

  1. Squat: You bend at the hips, knees, and ankles to lower your butt toward the ground, keeping your back straight, and your chest up. Then stand back up.
  2. Lunge: Position of the human body where one leg is positioned forward. With the knee bent and foot flat on the ground. The other leg is positioned behind.
  3. Hinge (bend): It consists of folding over from the hips while keeping the spine neutral and stacked.
  4. Push: Any movement that pushes weight away from the body or pushes body weight away from something.
  5. Pull: Any movement that pulls weight toward the body or pulls your body weight toward something period

Group Classes

SymbiosFit offers several different class options, large group, small group, tandem 4:1 or smaller, and personal training. SymbiosFit group training offers a different fitness class each day. The focus each day is on giving you the workout you need. The workout of the day is high-intensity training, tailored to your goals and lifestyle.

Expect each workout to use a variety of functional movements- including barbell work, kettlebell work, slam balls, calisthenics, and cardio. The programming is always varied just like your life. Our professionally certified coaches will take you through from start to finish ensuring the results you want.

Personal Training

If you are not interested in group classes SymbiosFit has a personal training program just for you. Our personal training program provides an individualized approach to your training. It will be a customized training program tailored to you and your current fitness abilities. You will work with a coach one on one to reach your fitness goals.

Whether you choose group classes or personal training, your journey starts with a fitness assessment. Then you will schedule a 12-class “On Ramp Course.” This course will guide you through the most commonly used movements, and how we program the workouts. As you add more functional exercises to your workout, you will see improvements in your ability to perform your everyday activities and your quality of life. That’s quite a return on your exercise investment.
